Washington Island Ferry

Off the point of Gills Rock, WI, there are several islands. One that is an established community is Washington Island. I went to the Gills Rock dock around 2 with the intention of going over without my car. I had read about a Cherry Train tour that would show the highlights of the island. The ticket booth attendant explained that the tour was over for the day and I would probably be better off taking my car. So I did.

The pilot and packing aficionado.

Having never taken a car on a ferry, I thought it would be a great adventure. The ferry crew was well versed in "packing" the vehicles on the ferry. Every available space was used. In fact, the return ferry, the last one leaving the island at 5 PM, was set up to transport 15 vehicles. But, the high level of traffic led to putting an additional ferry into service and adding three additional runs to guarantee transport for all. The 15 capacity ferry took 21 vehicles. Note the line for the return ferry.

Creeping along slowly.
As soon as the Subaru was loaded, I got up to the top deck to enjoy the sun and view. Since my car was in the middle of the pack, the move to the stairs was fairly unobstructed. When it was time to man my car, the path back was no longer clear. That ferry was packed bumper to bumper with inches to spare. It took some finagling, back tracking and bum rubbing to make it to my driver's seat. Initially, I was quite embarrassed, but time revealed that others were in the same boat, no pun intended, I was. It was entertaining to see how others tackled the dilemma.
A fun day!
